Over the course of the semester, I have learned a lot about the various elements of storytelling. Week by week, I tackled assignment after assignment. This final week was definitely a culmination of everything I have worked at over the course of the semester as I along with a group of my classmates completed one final project!
For my group’s final project, we decided to explore one area of storytelling that we havent really discussed as a class which is videogames.
Videogames are a great example of combining audio, visual and design to tell a story that invites the audience in.
With that being said, my group thought that making our own videogame would be a great project to end the seemster and showcase all that we have learned over the semester.
Earlier this week, we launched a movie trailor and a flyer to get people excited for our video game. A video game launch is really an important compnent of the sotrytelling of a videogame. It informs an audience of what the game is about and gets the audience excited! Our flyer and trailor requierd our knowledge of design, video, and audio.
In order to make our flyer, we used Canva. Canva has been really useful throughout the course of the semester to complete various projects and was really helpful to create a flyer for our game. I have really enjoyed using Canva and have actually used it a lot in other classes this semester because of how much I learned and used it over the seemster in this class.
We used iMovie using Christina’s laptop to create our videogame trailor. At the start of this semester, audio and video editing were two of the things that I was most unfamiliar with. But this semester has really given me the chance to grow my audio and video editing skills that came in handy for this project.
When it comes to elements of stroytelling, such as the audio, video, and design, everything serves a purpose. We wanted to make sure that the audio and visual design of both our flyer and trailer served the purpose of informing our audiences of our game and getting people excited to see what it will look like!
With our trailor and flyer released, it was time to focus on our game!
The main responsibility of mine for this project was to actually make the game. In order to make our game, we ultimatley decided to use Twine. Twine.com is an online gaming site in which you can make your own video game by presenting a series of options. The options help move the game along and based on the option picked the gamer either moves forward int he game or has to start the sequence over.
For our game, we decided to use the concept that your identity has been compromised and that the same person that compromised your identity has threatened to end the world. Your job is to recreate your identity, find the person responsible, and stop their next attack.
To begin the game with a series of choices that allow you to recreate your identity. Once you have a new identity chosen, your next task is to narrow suspects to find out who compromised your identity and find a way to stop them. To do so, you are met with a series of choices that based on your decision, will either move you along in the game or move you back.
Twine overall was pretty simple, but it definitley had some downsides. On the positive side, to make the sequence and choices for our game was reltively easy. You can easily add a block and add your own dialogue to help tell the story of your game. You can easily connect each block to form a sequence and move back and fourth in the sequence.
The tough part of twine was deifnitley the design elements of the game. In order to change the design or add pictures, you have to do some coding. I do not have much experience with coding so i releid hevavily on Google and Youtube to show me how. Using coding, we were able to add pictures and change the color scheme of our game. We opted for a dark, simple color scheme using red and black because that was consistent with our trailer. we also felt that these colors were very dark and mysterious and contributed to the classic elements of the secret agent genre.
Here is the link to our game!
Video games are one form of storytelling. It involves characters, design, photographs, audio and video. While our videogame itself doesn’t necesarilly have audio, it contains all the other elements that make a story such as pictures both still and moving, design, an phtoographs. In order ot incoporate the audio and video elements, we decided to go an extra step and do a full scale video gaem launch complete with flyers and trailors.
Overall, I am really proud of how our game turned out. This semester has been full of learning experiences and trying new things, and making a video game definitley falls unders something new and a learning experience for me. I have never made a video game before, but having my knowledge of audio, design, video and photography, my group and I were able to tackle something new and produce something that we are proud of that I think perfectly represents a semester of learning experiences and challanging ourselves.
