This week was all about remixes and mashups.
I have completed all of my mashup assignments for the week so now it was time to turn my attention to the remix portion of the week and complete two remix-ed assignments!
The first remix-ed assignment I completed was a remix of a web assignment that tasked me to create a postcard! The remix however, was that the post card had to include Waldo form “where’s Waldo” in a conspicuous way.
So here is my Where’s Waldo Post Card! Put your secret agent skills to the test and see if you can you Find him?
To make my postcard, I used the website called Pixlr. Pixlr was a site first introduced to me this week when completing one of my mashup assignments. In the past, I have avoided assignments that involved photo editing because I didn’t really have the tools to edit photos, but with Pixlr, I now have access to a free and easy to use photo editing website!
The first step to making my post card was to upload the pictures. I found this picture from a soccer game on google, and additionally downloaded a picture of Waldo. Once both of my pictures were downloaded, I uploaded them onto Pixlr by layering the Waldo image on top of the soccer background. Once it was layered, I was able to easy crop the outline of waldo and shrink him down to size. Then, I simply moved him to where I wanted him and added a bit of text to make it look more like a postcard!
This assignment was relatively easy which was actually a great thing for me! As I mentioned, in the past, I have avoided assignments that dealt with photo editing as I do not feel confident in my editing skills and abilities. However, this assignment was the second time this week where I was pushed out of my comfort zone to create a photo edited assignment!
The second remix assignment I did was actually sort of a remix of a remix…
So, I rushed reading through the instructions for this week, and failed to see the comment about trying to relate our assignments this week back to our character as much as possible. well, seeing how I already completed my other assignments, I decided to use my last remix assignment to connect back to my character!
The assignment I decided to remix was a design assignment that tasked me to design my dream bedroom. However, the remix of this assignment asked me to ‘Boot Camp’ it by making it tougher and putting a military feel to it. But as I said, I really wanted to connect this assignment to our theme and my character, so instead of making my dream bedroom with a military feel to it, I decided to create Justin’s Dream spy room with a secret agent feel to it!
In order to make my remix-ed assignment, I first needed to download all the pictures. Using Google, I searched for all the types of things you would expect to find in the ultimate secret agent office, but also things that I thought would reflect Justin’s story (i.e. high tech surveillance system). Once I downloaded all of my pictures, I uploaded them all to Canva to make the graphics of the layout of Justin’s Office. Canva has been something that I have used a lot in this class over the course of the semester, and is something that I think I will continue to use in this class and outside of the classroom. It is super easy to use and the possibilities to make all kinds of graphics are endless!
My favorite part of Justin’s office is the gym and the surveillance system. I added the gym because of my own personal love for working out. I also thought it would be a nice touch as a secret agent is usually fit and I designed Justin to be an extremely attractive, young, physically fit man. The surveillance system is my other favorite part about Justin’s office. First off, who wouldn’t want the ability to spy on anyone at any time. But most importantly, the surveillance system was a necessary addition to designing Justin’s office because it connects back to his work as a secret agent as he attempts to infiltrate and uncover the mobsters that murdered his wife and daughter and put them behind bars.
I had a lot of fun creating remix-ed assignments this week. I have always noticed the remix-button, but never knew why it was there or what it did. I think remixes of assignments are a great way to not only add a fun or interesting element to the assignments, but also challenge us. Some of the remixes were harder to incorporate than others, but it pushed me to be creative and try my best to make creating and entertaining content. That is ultimately what inspired me to remix a remix and make a combat inspired dream room into a secret agent inspired spy office. I think remixes are also a great way to combine multiple elements into one assignment and connect audio, design, photography, and/or video. these two remixes really pushed me to combine my knowledge of design and photography in new and exciting ways, and I am happy with the chance to have gotten pushed out of my comfort zone with my photo editing skills and conquering challenges to creativity.
